It is known that eating disorders are caused by the media-fueled beauty club. Men suffering from this disease are fewer than women, but the traits are the same:
- Excessive fear of becoming fat even when normal;
- Self-induced starvation;
- Tendency to depression and compulsive living patterns;
- Excessive exercise;
- There are serious endocrinology effects;
- Low self-esteem;
- There have been reported many suicidal attempts;
- Purging behavior (self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics and enemas);
- A decreased sexual drive.
For men, it is more like a “manhood” matter. They do not think in terms of “fat” or “thin” like women do; but in terms of “weak” and “strong”. “Fat “is associated with disgust, weakness, unmanliness.
What is most frightful is that men do not find any support in groups or treatments; they are refused when they seek it and if they find it, they must deal firstly with frustration and shame. Also, the percentage of effeminate homosexual is high among people with eating disorders, but 80% of them are heterosexual males. There is also necessary to mention that men have 10% of the existing eating disorders. Because statistical infrequency, the percentages have been neglected and anorexia in men was not until recently an utopist subject. The most concerning aspect is that men out-die women in 15 cases.
