The effects of such a disease are not to be neglected:

  • Delayed develoment (for persons before puberty)
  • The decreased libido or impotences (in males) is also a hint for anorexia nervosa
  • In the behavioral area one may notice fainting, self-harm, suicide attempts, low self-esteem, agressiveness when forced eating fat-foods
  • There are also personality disorders like high levels of anxiety and depression
  • In physical changes one may notice: thinning of the hair, reduction of the immune system functions, constpation, a drier skin, easily bruising, headaches, nerve deterioration, the “sunken eyes” effect, endocrine disorders, alow heart rate, anemia;
  • Amenorheea, the term describing the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles;
  • The body mass index may become less than 17.5 in adults
  • Realtionships with the family become more tensionate

Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. There is a numebr of 10% of the cases that end up dying due to the effects mentioned., especially because of  the suicidal attempts. The sucide rate of  anorexic people is higher than the rate of the global population. Less than 50% of the people with this disorder recover completely, only 30% improve and 20% remain with a chronycal anorexia.
